Thrown: The Art Of Yo-Yos

"Thrown" is an exhibit of yo-yo related artwork, created entirely by yo-yo players!

Ink drawings, paintings, airbrush, silkscreen, customized yo-yos, and plenty more from a motley assemblage of yo-yo players young and old will take over the Shoparooni Annex.

Yo-Yos are a creative endeavour that is generally abandoned with youth. Through this assemblage of works from adults and young adults who never stopped playing, we hope to present the art of yo-yo play as seen through the eyes of the people who never gave it up. Also, there will be beer.

Participating artists include:

Seth Peterson (IA)
Mark McBride (CA)
John Higby (MA)
Krisgoat (OR)
Steve Brown (OH)
Sonny Patrick (CA)
Drew Tetz (MO)
Jensen Kimmitt (Canada)
Doc Pop (CA)
Paul Escolar (CA)
Ashkahn Shahparnia (CA)
Eric Carlson (WV)
Saxton Moore (OH)
Mark Hayward (PA)

For those who cannot attend, all works will be available online after the opening at www.shoparooni.com!

the steve brown gallery

So yeah. Things are a bit up in the air these days.

Marlee and I have split up. I have no interest in going in to anymore detail than that. We've been friendly with each other and just kind of moving right along so that's good.

I'm no longer working at Shoparooni, at all. I'll be continuing to curate/promote the gallery shows I booked in The Annex, but purely on a contract basis and that's that. It helps out Marlee, it keeps the shop moving forward, and it allows me to continue pursuing this new thing I'm doing.

F'reals!

I'm pretty tired these days. Busting ass to get this gallery/curating business off the ground, taking care of the kids full-time, and scrambling around for a day-job to fill the gaps until all these shows I've booked start bringing in money. I don't like the financial situation I've found myself in, and I'm workin' HARD to get myself out of it as quickly as possible.

Life is weird these days, so if I'm elusive...please forgive me.

Kidrobot laughs last.

I want this.

I've never found much appealing in the Kidrobot clothing line. I'm not much for big, all-over prints and lots of bright colors...just looks weird on me.

But I might just have to buy this shirt.

Brian M. Viveros

Stumbled across yet another incredible artist that I had to share...

I'm a sucker for women. I'm even more of a sucker for dangerous women. Clearly, since I married one.

So with his choice of subject matter, coupled with his excruciatingly obvious talent, it's no wonder I'm now a fan of Brian M. Viveros.

The first piece shown, "After Midnight", is currently in the Movers & Shakers show at the POVevolving Gallery out in Los Angeles. Well worth a look, if you're in the neighborhood. Show includes Brian M. Viveros, Chet Zar, Chris Ryniak, Amy Sol, Scott Radke, Jeff Soto, Mark Murphy, and a whole slew of other artists whose work makes me wish I was fabulously wealthy. Seriously...it's one of the best group show line-ups I've seen in a LOOONG time. It's epic. Go. Go. Go!

art. dig it.

I've been spending a great deal more time lately paying attention to contemporary art. And I've realized that HOLY CRAP there is soooo much out there that people just don't know about...myself included! Seems like every time I find an artist I dig, they lead me to five more I'd never heard of. It's crazy.

So here, in no particular order, are a fistful of artists you should totally check out.

Audrey Kawasaki

It's almost odd that I should be so attracted to such a delicate, feminine style like this. It really almost goes against my nature. But Audrey's work is just so perfect that it's almost otherworldly.

mcbess

Courtesy of my friends at Rotofugi I just learned about this French illustrator who has totally won me over. His simple drawing style reminds me of Jeremyville and Peter Bagge, but there's something else there that just totally nails me, and I'm REALLY digging his work. The piece above was part of his recent show at Rotofugi, and I should have bought it when I had the chance. Argh. Next time!

Ray Caesar

Ray's work is 100% digital and simply incredible. Once an image is created, a single print is made and the digital file is destroyed. If more people worked in digital with his skill, it would be taken far more seriously as a medium. Mind-blowing doesn't even begin to cover it...the longer you look, the more detail you find.

Travis Louie

One of those artists whose work I had seen here and there without knowing much about it. Then I was over a buddies house, and saw one of his prints framed and got a good look at it up-close. WOW. The stories he creates for each character are stellar, and his work is amazing. Plus, dude's got the best handwriting I've ever seen. I would see a show of nothing but personal letters and notes he's written to people.

Brandt Peters

I found Brandt's work through his toy stuff, which is pretty cool but not really my jam as far as toy collecting. But his fine art makes me drool, and he's on my short list of artists I'd like to own an original by. His wife Kathie is no slouch either, but while she's got the character design on lock, Brandt's paintings seem more advanced and they're clearly getting better with every step. The two of them together are an impressive juggernaut, but Brandt's stuff wins for me everytime. There are some pieces available from his most recent show at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles (right next door to my beloved Golden Apple Comics, RIP Bill!) and they are well worth the bucks if you can spare 'em.

More later when I have time....

progress?

How did I get from here:
